Why are some lawyers better at settling cases than others? Why is harder to get certain clients to agree to a reasonable compromise? Understanding how the brain processes conflict is key to managing and resolving disputes. From business formation, real estate and transactional work, to estate planning and probate, to full-fledged litigation, all forms of practice involve conflict resolution. Collaborative Practice is based on an understanding of how conflict negatively impacts an individual’s ability to engage in a rational resolution process and provides concrete tools for diminishing those impacts. Originally developed for family law cases, collaborative practice is now used regularly to address pre-and-post mortem estate disputes and other civil matters. Collaborative tools can help reduce client costs, improve results, and lead to greater client satisfaction.

Patenting Chemical and Life Sciences Inventions at the Eurasian Patent Office Although the Eurasian Patent Convention covers eight contracting states comprising more than 200 million inhabitants, this regional system is not well known, and applicants frequently file one or more national applications. However, there are advantages in using this system particularly for protecting chemical and life sciences inventions. We will discuss the advantages of the Eurasian Patent Convention.

Trademark Protection in Switzerland

Switzerland is a territory often overlooked when companies develop their trademark strategy. As a central European country outside the European Union, Switzerland has a significant economic role and should be considered an important territory to consider. However, applying in Switzerland means complying to certain local rules, as it is outside the European trademark system. We will provide an outline of the application process.

Jon Renge's Bio

The grandson of Central Valley Japanese farmers who were stripped of their possessions and forced into internment camps during World War II, Jon Renge is a ferocious warrior for those accused of crimes by the government. Judge Austin, Jay Chafetz, Larry Cook and Phil Andersen will all be talking about best practices and tips & tricks for volunteering as a Discovery Facilitator.

This program is specifically designed for discovery facilitators rather than litigants subject to the program (although all are welcome to attend), and will involve a review of the relevant Rules of Court, comments by judges, and discussion by experienced facilitators.

Formally launched yesterday, the site provides a searchable collection all official or quasi-official federal civil and criminal instructions and annotations, as well as an index of 20,000 legal terms, statutes, CFRs and Supreme Court cases referenced in jury instructions.

California law establishes unique rules governing when time spent is compensable “hours worked.” How these rules are applied to travel time is continuing to evolve.

Unlike federal law, under which employees need only be paid for time when they’re “suffered or permitted to work,” California law requires that an employee be paid for time if the employee is either “suffered or permitted to work” or “subject to the control” of the employer. The second standard results in more compensable time under California law than federal law.
