A panel of ADR professionals will discuss the challenges and best practices in mediations involving members of traditionally underrepresented or disadvantaged groups. The panel will address cultural differences and the impact of those differences on the mediation process.

Who must be consulted before a resolution is reached? What are the most important considerations for that community or in that culture? How can you learn about those issues? Speakers include those experienced in racial, ethnic or religious cross- and intercultural mediation, LGBT family mediation, and work with gang members in mediation.

Record numbers of individuals, immigrants and non-immigrants alike, have been dis-enrolling from public benefit programs after draft changes to current immigration rules were leaked to the press, fearing that being on public benefits would adversely impact their immigration status. Other individuals no longer apply for public benefits when eligible out of fear. The leaked changes have not become law, but the impact has been unmistakable.

Come learn about what legal changes have been made by the Department of State and what immigrant visa applicants must show to overcome this ground of inadmissibility, as well as what changes are still in the works with the Department of Homeland Security to expand the public benefit programs that can be considered and other factors that must be considered beyond the affidavit of support.

Navigate these challenges with practical tips from intake to case completion. Inform yourself to be able to share critical information with clients and the greater community.

The procedures for the taking of evidence followed in international arbitration differ greatly from domestic litigation and arbitration in the US. Depositions, wide ranging document discovery and written interrogatories will generally be excluded and arbitral hearings are often far shorter than what one finds in domestic cases. These differences can often come as a surprise to US counsel who are not experienced in the field.

In this seminar, we will review the common rules governing document production, witnesses and experts as applied in international arbitration. Attendees will also be introduced to some of the thorny evidentiary issues that often arise in this context, as well as the common solutions that are often adopted.

The webinar will be a general discussion of the basic U.S. and California income tax rules that apply to nonresident aliens, including determining when a person is a U.S. or California resident for U.S. federal and California income tax purposes. In addition, the discussion will center on the kinds of U.S. and California-source income that is subject to tax in the hands of nonresident aliens, and tax planning strategies that can be implemented in connection therewith (including the effect of income tax treaties on residency issues and substantive income tax issues.) The subject matter of the webinar applies ‘in general’ to any nonresident alien that visits/comes to the U.S. from any foreign country. Nevertheless, the examples that will be given throughout the presentation will focus specifically on Chinese and Mexican nonresident aliens.
