Interrogatories are powerful—they allow you to ask questions and then use the answers at trial. But you’re limited as to who you may serve with interrogatories. Here are the four main categories of who can be served with interrogatories.

    National Law Journal

    June 27, 2019

As she approaches her 10th year as the leader of California’s judiciary, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, chief justice of the California Supreme Court, is enjoying decidedly better conditions than she did in her first years on the bench.

The state’s budget is flush, offering new judgeships and more money for a judicial branch that was hit by draconian spending cuts after Cantil-Sakauye was sworn in in 2010. The criticism leveled at her by fellow jurists early in her tenure—she was once deemed too bureaucratic by a group known as the Alliance of California Judges—has largely waned, and California’s new governor has showered her with public praise for “her leadership and her stubbornness” in lobbying for the judiciary.

Occasionally, a band or artist will be involved in a lawsuit so groundbreaking and important that it will set a precedent—either one that’s enshrined in the law that can be followed by everyone, or one that is less official but nevertheless binds future generations.

    The Modern Law Library

    June 20, 2019

The good news for anyone aspiring to a life of crime is that you may be a multiple offender of federal criminal laws without even being aware of it.

Mike Chase, a white-collar defense attorney with Shipman & Goodwin, launched his popular Twitter account @CrimeADay in an attempt to begin counting how many federal crimes are on the books in the Unites States. Five years later, he’s still going strong, and the exercise led him to write How to Become a Federal Criminal: An Illustrated Handbook for the Aspiring Offender.

In this episode of the Modern Law Library, Chase talks with the ABA Journal’s Lee Rawles about crimes like impersonating a mailman, importing pregnant polar bears, selling mail-order dentures, and letting your falcon be filmed for a movie.
