The parent/child relationship is the foundation of a litany of rights involving custody and visitation, healthcare decision-making, family reunification, child support, heirship, survivorship benefits and wrongful death recovery. Yet false assumptions about the commonly used term “natural parent” lead to waived claims and error across legal practice areas. This presentation explores the evolving statutory and common law defining the parent-child relationship to assist practitioners to identify and navigate parentage issues in diverse family situations.
