Transgender Employment Issues
The laws relating to transgender people have changed significantly in recent years.
This CLE event will explain the latest legal developments relating to transgender workers in California, as well best practices for supporting trans employees. Common issues include names and pronouns, bathrooms, and dress codes.
Ilona Turner, Esq.
Attorney and Mediator
Ms. Turner is a lawyer and mediator based in Oakland, California. She has spent nearly 20 years working as a lawyer and advocate for LGBT rights. In the early 2000s, she was the lobbyist for Equality California, the statewide LGBT advocacy organization, where she helped enact laws that expanded the rights of domestic partners and prohibited discrimination based on gender identity. Ms. Turner was an associate at the labor law firm of Cohen Weiss and Simon in New York City, and then a staff attorney for the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco. Most recently, she served as legal director for the national Transgender Law Center for six years. She left that position in 2017 to launch her mediation practice, which focuses on cases involving LGBT parties, nonprofit organizations, and employment discrimination. Ms. Turner attended law school at U.C. Berkeley, where she was managing editor of the law review. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters on issues of LGBT law.
