Description:

 

California State Bar Guidelines require 12 hours of Juvenile Training before representing a minor in juvenile court.  Part 3, of the Criminal Law Section Series on Juvenile Practice, will teach you the different dispositions available to minors in juvenile courts from diversion to youth authority; how to reach the best disposition for your client, what options you have post disposition, and your responsibilities with juveniles tried in adult court.

Maureen Pacheco, Moderator

Maureen Pacheco is the Trainer for the Juvenile Division of the Alternate Public Defenders Office in Los Angeles and handles the office’s juvenile life without parole resentencing cases.  After graduation from Georgetown Law School in 1986, she became a public defender. From 2010-2013, Maureen was the Assistant Director at Loyola Law School’s Center for Juvenile Law and Policy, where she cofounded and taught the Juvenile Innocence and Fair Sentencing Clinic. She is the cofounder of the Pacific Juvenile Defender Center’s Amicus group and is the juvenile legislative liaison for the California Public Defenders Association. She authored the first bill in the nation to provide for the automatic sealing of juvenile records and has testified as a juvenile law expert before various committees of the California Legislature. Maureen serves on the Advisory Board for the Pacific Juvenile Defender Center, is Chair of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Juvenile Justice Committee, and co-author of Guidelines for Los Angeles Delinquency Practitioners.  She was awarded the Juvenile Defender of the Year in 2015 by the Pacific Juvenile Defender Center and was honored as 2017 Criminal Defense Attorney of the Year by the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

 

Jessica Melikian

Jessica Melikian is a Deputy Alternate Public Defender for the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender’s Office. She attended Loyola Law School where she spent one year representing clients in juvenile court as a certified law student in Loyola’s Juvenile Justice Clinic at the Center for Juvenile Law and Policy. She graduated law school in 2010 and became a Deputy Public Defender. She currently represents children in delinquency matters at the Inglewood Juvenile Court and previously represented adult clients in misdemeanor and felony cases. She has provided training to attorneys in her office and is a volunteer instructor with the Long Beach Bar Association’s Shortstop Program and LA County Teen Court.
