    Is Climate Change the next Big Tobacco? A wave of lawsuits in California seeks to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for their contribution to climate change. In 2017, the Counties of San Mateo, Marin, and Santa Cruz, and the Cities of San Francisco, Oakland, Imperial Beach, and Santa Cruz filed complaints against more than three dozen fossil fuel companies under theories including public nuisance, private nuisance, strict liability for design defect and failure to warn, negligence, and trespass. Will courts apply these ancient legal doctrines to this modern existential threat? What are the hurdles and complexities in this emerging area of climate law?

    The speakers will address how these directives work and don't work in real life situations and what every lawyer can do to educate clients adequately about them. Including the appointed agent in the education can make all the difference. There are good ways to "outsource" that as needed. The AHD should not be an afterthought in estate planning.

    This presentation will address how California’s longstanding sexual harassment training requirements have been significantly expanded by both the Legislature and the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. New statutes and regulations have expanded the training requirement to virtually all employees of a business or agency in California, regardless of size. In addition, key regulations went into effect mandating new content for sexual harassment trainings, including training meant to address harassment and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

    This panel will address:
    1) What you need to know about the new employer requirements;
    2) Best practices for conducting sexual harassment training; and
    3) How an effective training program can help prevent, correct, and defend against “me too” and related claims.

    Concerns about access to justice throughout the country have caused some jurisdictions to explore means by which they can provide the public with affordable and easily accessible legal services. In this section, we look at three models, both new and long-standing, developed in Utah, Washington, and Arizona.

    Workers in the gig economy in California may be getting extra labor protections if Assembly Bill 5, which could upend the definition of contract employees, is taken up by the California Senate by the time it adjourns on September 13, as is expected. The bill cleared the fiscal committee in the state senate on August 30. Here, labor law expert Stanford Law Professor William B. Gould IV discusses the bill and objections to it by Lyft and Uber.
