Aranda Access to Justice Award

JUDGE CAROL S. BROSNAHAN

In partnership with the Judicial Council and the California Judges Association, the California Lawyers Association announced that Judge Carol S. Brosnahan of the Alameda County Superior Court is the recipient of its 2019 Aranda Access to Justice Award. The award honors a judge demonstrating a long-term, tireless commitment to improving, and promoting fairness and access to, the courts, especially for low-and moderate-income Californians.

Judge Brosnahan is celebrating her 40th year on the Alameda County bench, where she operates the county's behavioral health court and has been referred to as a "grass-roots" judge, who renders fair rulings with integrity, and without bias based upon socio-economic status or any other non-relevant factors.

An article in the San Francisco Chronicle earlier this year quoted Jeff Chorney, an Alameda County public defender who often represents mentally ill clients. "She seems to be driven by a real desire to make the world a better place…I think people in Alameda County might not know who she is, but a lot of people have felt the effect of what she has done."

She will be honored on Nov. 14, 2019, in a presentation that will be live-streamed at 4PM.

Find out where the clients are and how to get to them. Hear about cutting edge litigation, in state and federal courts, related to cannabis and hemp.  Get updates on federal legalization efforts. Find out about new social equity programs emerging statewide and in certain cities. About the Speaker: Matt Kumin began his career working primarily as a civil rights attorney representing plaintiffs in police misconduct and employment cases.  As cannabis issues and specifically, cannabis business operations emerged after 1996 in San Francisco, birthplace of the first community-based cannabis operations, Matt, also maintaining a small business practice, began to advise these "clubs."  In the intervening 23 years, Matt tackled as many legal issues as he could, protecting medical cannabis patients and the "industry", despite little or no precedent to guide his counseling and without the support of the organized Bar.  Finding some allies to help, he was the architect of the first US Tax Court case addressing federal taxation of medical cannabis (CHAMP v. Com'r of the IRS), successfully obtained injunctions against the City of Los Angeles and Sonoma County, and guided hundreds of businesses through the minefields of Prohibition-powered legal ambiguity.  Minesweeping operations also necessarily brought Matt deeper into political advocacy and to that end, Matt co-founded a PAC to educate policy and lawmakers and to organize Legalization initiatives.  Establishing the first multi-state law practice devoted to cannabis in 2009 (opening offices in Denver and Los Angeles), Matt has continued to work nationally and internationally to both serve the expanding industry and to end cannabis Prohibition.  Online registration HERE Download a flyer 2019_1114_Cannabis_Flyer.pdf The Alameda County Law Library is a multiple activity provider approved by the State Bar of California.
